DIFFERENTIATING MATH INSTRUCTION IN SECOND GRADE
Pre and Post Tests
During my data collection, students took a pre and post test. Pre and post tests were used to monitor student prior knowledge of the concepts and observe growth throughout the unit. These tests were given via pencil and paper and had the same questions. I used the pre-test to determine starting groups and what skills needed to be emphasized during instruction. I used the post-test to identify areas within the content that needed to be continued into our next unit.
Students completed a survey about their attitude toward math at the end of each week. The surveys were chosen to communicate their feelings and perceptions about math. I used this data to inform my instruction as I was able to see who was feeling less confident and put these students into groups together during the week to better implement reteaching strategies to help boost their confidence.

Anecdotal Notes
During lessons, I made observational notes and recorded them for future reflection. Anecdotal notes were chosen for this population as a way to monitor student solution strategies and note future instruction opportunities. These notes guided my instruction because I was able to determine themes and misconceptions that needed to be addressed.
